College of Science & Engineering Technical Support Services Committee Terms of Reference 

Objectives:

To provide guidance and recommendations to the college technical services team in relation to technical services strategy and direction, in line with the college strategic plan. Including the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Identifying needs and priority areas for College wide research and teaching support;
  • Identifying needs and priority areas for College instrument infrastructure investment and maintenance;
  • Identifying needs and priority areas for College building investment and maintenance;
  • Identifying related Capital Investment Bid opportunities in line with the college objectives and strategic plan.
  • Make recommendations on roles and responsibilities and coupling points between technical staff and academics.
  • Review high level priorities of research projects that are being supported by the Technical Support Services Team.

Membership:

The Committee shall include:

  • Laboratory and Technical Services Lead (Chair)
  • 2 x Teaching Program Leads (or their delegate) as nominated by the Dean (Teaching & Learning).
  • 2 x Research Section Leads (or their delegate) as nominated by the Dean (Research).
  • 2 x Technical Services staff representing teaching support as nominated by the Laboratory & Technical Services Lead.
  • 2 x Technical Services staff representing the research support as nominated by the Laboratory & Technical Services Lead.
  • A Technical Services staff member that does not directly support teaching or research (e.g. procurement or facilities officers) can be included on the committee by displacing one of the professional staff positions above, as nominated by the Laboratory & Technical Services Lead.

All members shall have voting rights.

Committee members can send a proxy on their behalf.

There must be representation on the committee from both the Tonsley and Bedford Park campuses across the professional and academic nominees.
 

Meeting frequency:

Meetings will be held a minimum of eight times per year. Extraordinary meetings can be scheduled as required.

Term

The term of committee members is a maximum of two years with the exception of the Laboratory and Technical Services Lead.

Decision-Making and Voting Rights:

Committee decisions are normally reached by consensus, as determined by the Chair.
If consensus cannot be reached, a simple majority vote will be cast. The outcomes of the committee are in the form of recommendations only.

Reporting:

The recommendations are to be tabled and provided to the Director, College Services who is responsible for the consideration of the recommendations and communicating with the College executive team.

Conflicts of Interest:

A Governance Committee member who has a conflict of interest must declare that conflict at the commencement of any meeting at which the matter is considered. All declared conflicts of interest, and any measures taken to address these conflicts, shall be minuted and uploaded into the conflicts register.

Quorum:

50% of membership plus 1
