Terms of Reference CSE Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) Committee
The role of the CSE Higher Degrees by Research Committee is to assist and advise the CSE HDR Coordinator with regard to matters that relate to the management of Higher Degrees by Research.
The CSE HDR Committee is responsible for:
- Promoting a College research culture that adheres to the Australian Council of Graduate Research principles of good practice (https://www.acgr.edu.au/good-practice/graduate-research-good-practice-principles/)
- Providing advice to the CSE HDR Coordinator on policies and procedures relating to higher degrees by research education and training in the College;
- Developing a College-based strategy to enhance the quality and number of HDR students;
- Developing a College-based strategy to promote HDR opportunities at Flinders
- Providing advice on the provision of resources and other academic management issues that impact HDR students;
- Assisting supervisors to assign assessors to each HDR student and to guide HDR students through the milestone process. HDR academic advisors will be required to Chair Thesis Milestone Panels and to review and sign off on the completed milestones in INSPIRE in their discipline area. - Providing advice and support to the CSE HDR Coordinator on a range of HDR processes within the College including:
- Assessment of scholarship applications
- Assessment of divergent HDR examination cases if required
- Advice on student grievances raised through Student Appeals Committee or external agencies
- Providing recommendations to the Office for Graduation Research for inclusion of new supervisors in the supervisor register
- Management of other candidature related matters as required.
- Overseeing College HDR induction programs;
- Overseeing annual HDR events;
- Liaising with the Dean, Research to ensure appropriate facilities and financial resources are in place for HDR students.
- To rank applications for the VC Prize for Doctoral Thesis Excellence, and Best Student Publication Awards.
- To consider and award applications for CSE HDR Travel Grants including Elaine Martin Travel Funds biannually (at these times support from the College Research Support Staff will be required as this involves funds from the College Research Budget, the Dean of Research should also be invited to attend)
The CSE HDR Committee will report to the CSE Research Committee.

- CSE HDR Coordinator
- At least 4 academic representative members ( HDR Academic Advisors) to cover the disciplines that HDR students enrol in the College:
- CHEM, PHYS
- BIOL- Natural Sciences
- BIOL- Molecular and Physical Sciences
- ENG, COMP, MATH and STAT
- ENV, ENVH and EASC
These members will have experience in dealing with day-to-day HDR matters in the College, will be current supervisors of HDR students, and have supervised several students to completion. At least one HDR Academic Advisor should be based at Tonsley.
- 1 professional staff representative from CSE Research, Development and Support team
- CSE Dean (Research) or College Research Support Staff invited when required.
