Staff travel insurance

Workplace support Staff travel insurance

Flinders University provides travel insurance cover for staff who have been approved to travel for and on behalf of the University.

If you are a Flinders University staff member travelling within Australia or overseas for your work, then you have access to insurance cover for your university travel, subject to University and policy terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions. See more detailed information below. (see ‘Eligibility for cover’ to determine whether you are within the limits)

Eligibility for cover

Cover is provided for staff undertaking approved* travel on behalf of Flinders University subject to the following conditions:

  • Your overall travel period is a maximum of 365 days, and
  • The percentage of Incidental Private Travel** does not exceed 50% of the work period, and
  • The journey involves a destination 50 kilometres or more away and commences from, and concludes at, your normal workplace or residence (whichever is left last).

If you do not meet these conditions cover may not apply to all or part of your trip.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fully covered for the whole period you will be away.

* Cover for international travel is provided once your request has been approved in Nutrip (regardless of funding source). See the staff travel webpages for more details.

** Please refer to the Combining Business and Private Travel Procedures for additional considerations with regards to Fringe Benefits Tax limitations on Incidental Private Travel.

Pre-existing medical conditions

The University’s travel insurance policy contains exclusions relating to known or suspected pre-existing medical conditions.

Examples of specific exclusions include where the traveller:

  • is travelling against the advice of a doctor or dentist;
  • is unfit to travel;
  • is seeking medical attention for a pre-existing condition;
  • has been diagnosed with a terminal condition prior to travel;
  • obtains routine medical, optical or dental treatment or consultation.

Note - Any medication or ongoing treatment for your pre-existing condition(s) is not covered.

We recommend that you obtain current written clearances to travel from your treating Doctor(s) and keep the letter(s) with you in case of a claim. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate level of cover.

Cover for personal effects including electronic equipment

Personal effects including laptops and electronic equipment, travel documents, money, credit cards and jewellery (if not worn) should be carried on board in your hand-luggage and securely stored at all other times. There is a maximum limit of $20,000 for baggage and business property, with a $6,000 maximum per item/pair or set. A $100 excess applies to baggage claims, except in the case of electronic equipment, which carries a $250 excess and a $15,000 limit.

For more details, consult the Schedule of Benefits.

Cover for rental vehicles

You are responsible for ensuring that the vehicle you are hiring is covered by an insurance policy that covers third party liability damages / injuries. Any driver must take reasonable care and have an appropriate driver’s licence, as per the University’s Driver and Vehicle Safety Procedures.

Rental car companies may hire vehicles at an increased excess and offer to lower that excess on payment of a fee. This may not be necessary as the University’s travel insurance will cover the rental vehicle excess up to $5,000 subject to policy terms, conditions and excesses. If in doubt, contact Risk and Assurance Services.

For more details, consult the Schedule of Benefits.

Non-University related private travel

Staff can apply for private travel insurance from the University's insurer, which can be requested online.

The Leisure Travel insurance policy is issued and underwritten by Chubb Insurance Australia Limited (ABN 23 001 642 020, AFSL 239687) ("Chubb"). Flinders University does not receive a benefit for any policy issued by Chubb as a result of this referral. Flinders University does not provide any financial product advice, and this referral does not constitute a recommendation or endorsement of the insurance policy by Flinders University. Before making a decision please consider the Product Disclosure Statement available from Chubb. Leisure Travel insurance policies issued through this referral to staff and alumni of Flinders University are eligible for a 10% discount on Chubb's standard net premium.

COVID-19 and travel insurance

The advice below is applicable for staff and students travelling on behalf of the University.

Subject to the terms and conditions of the University’s travel insurance policy, if you become infected with COVID-19 whilst travelling (or if you are affected by close contact restrictions) you may be covered for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Evacuation to your country of residence
  • Losses relating to flights, accommodation etc.
  • Additional out of pocket expenses including quarantine costs.

If you are unable to commence your journey due to contracting COVID-19 or close contact restrictions, then loss of deposits may be covered.

The University’s travel insurer considers COVID-19 to be a ‘foreseen circumstance’ and as such will not typically cover other COVID-19 related claims. This includes losses incurred before travel commences (such as government-imposed border closures, or where you decide not to travel due to COVID-19 etc).
