Flinders Learning Online (FLO)

Workplace support Digital services Flinders Learning Online (FLO)

FLO – short for Flinders Learning Online – is the online learning platform used by Flinders University.

FLO is the major teaching and communication tool for topics.  It is where students will find their topic information, submit their assignments, watch lecture recordings, participate in online discussions, plus much more.

FLO can be used to create entire online topics and courses, or to provide interactive tools that supplement or complement existing topics and courses. All topics at Flinders have a FLO site (part of WebPET - Web Presence in Every Topic).

FLO is getting a facelift

FLO will be upgraded on 16 December as part of the regular upgrade cycle. The software underpinning FLO will not change, but the look and feel and navigation will undergo a facelift.

FLO will still function in the same way as it currently does, and some new features will be added. Whilst you will still be able to do everything you could before, you might find some functions in a slightly different location.

The key benefits for all staff and students after the upgrade are:

  • A more contemporary look and feel
  • Better ability for users to control the way topics are viewed on the dashboard
  • Improved navigation
  • More mobile friendly
  • A timeline feed for students showing upcoming due dates
  • Easier access to recently visited topics and activities

This video highlights some of the key look and feel and navigation changes:

FLO upgrade roadshows - staff

Roadshows will be held in college locations to demonstrate the changes. Staff can book into roadshows using iEnrol and will be recorded for those unable to attend. Staff teaching over summer are encouraged to attend the roadshows in November or December. Roadshows will also be offered in January and February for staff teaching in semester 1 and 2.

New features

Some of the new features include improvements to forums, quizzes, assignments and gradebook:

In forums teachers and students can:

  • post and reply without opening a new page
  • sort discussions by latest post, original post date or the number of replies
  • star favourite posts
  • subscribe to discussion threads more easily

In forums teachers can:

  • reply privately to students
  • use improved grading options – grade a post, an entire forum and use rubrics or marking guides
  • add due and cut-off dates to a forum (and the due date will be added to the topic calendar)
  • manually lock discussions
  • export forums

In quizzes students can:

  • 'clear options' in multiple choice questions

In quizzes teachers can:

  • use tags and ID numbers to better manage question banks
  • manage categories and questions in an improved question bank - tabs for easy access to questions and categories, new edit menu for questions
  • view logs showing additions/modifications to questions in the question bank

In assignments teachers can:

  • perform anonymous grading
  • present a submission statement better aligned to group assignment submissions
  • give audio feedback
  • provide media files as feedback

In gradebook teachers can:

  • use IF, AND, OR functions in formulas

In activity chooser teachers can:

  • indicate favourites with a star
  • view activities in a new tab style interface
  • choose from recommended activities
