To foster good practice and continue to provide resources and support that underpins high quality, valued research, Flinders University has a Research Integrity Policy and Breach of Research Integrity Procedures. The policy and procedures can be accessed via the Flinders University Policy Library.
The University's Research Integrity Policy adopts the revised Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018) (the Code) in full.
The policy applies to all researchers at Flinders, including:
The Policy applies in respect of Flinders University-related research activities, including the supervision of higher degree research student activities. It does not apply to coursework students, who are instead within the scope of the Student Academic Integrity Policy.
The principles and the researcher responsibilities of the Code have been reproduced in table format as a Schedule to the policy, with a list of relevant University policies and practices that apply to each principle and each responsibility. This enables the Research Integrity Policy to serve as a single, definitive, binding point of reference for research integrity at Flinders University.
The Breach of Research Integrity Procedures reflect the requirements of the 2018 NHMRC Guide to Managing and Investigating Potential Breaches of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (the Investigation Guide).
The Procedures contain step by step details of the process to be followed at Flinders University when a complaint is made about a potential breach of the Code. The Procedures are consistent with the Investigation Guide and are tailored to Flinders University.
Flinders University embraces the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, including machine learning. It recognises the potential to propel our research endeavours towards addressing local, national, and global challenges while positively impacting lives. We acknowledge that AI can enhance the University’s ability to amplify our capacity to conduct research, fostering efficiency, accuracy, and innovation, thereby rendering scientific discovery more accessible worldwide.
Embracing AI in research has the potential to transform and further academic research. The latest technology can generate hypotheses, analyse data, perform predictive modelling, create content, and aid in the automation of research techniques.
However, using this rapidly evolving technology comes with ethical and societal considerations, challenges, and consequences such as copyright, intellectual property rights, bias, privacy, security, and transparency. Thus, the responsible use of AI in achieving the University’s mission and its values is essential. We are committed to using AI ethically and transparently, consistent with our integrity, courage, and excellence values. We recognise AI's ethical implications and are committed to addressing these issues through rigorous ethical standards and practices such as the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research.
To adhere to the responsible use of AI, all content in research outputs, such as publications, research theses, and non-traditional research outputs, must be originally created by Flinders University researchers or their co-investigators. If another source creates content, it must be clearly, openly acknowledged and cited.

Library guide on AI: The Library guide provides advice on citing and acknowledging the use of AI tools, using AI in publications and grant applications, and AI content and copyright. This includes a list of commonly available AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT) and advice on referencing AI and privacy issues. Furthermore, the guide provides a framework for appraising AI tools.

A range of communication and training activities led by the research integrity team in Research Development and Support (RDS) are planned to ensure that our researchers, including HDR students, are aware of their obligations under the Code and the consequences of breaching the Code.
The training activities also ensure Flinders University’s compliance with the Code and Investigation Guide.
