Role/Charter

The Flinders Law Board of Advisors consists of an external, expert and experienced group of industry practitioners who advise the College of Business, Government & Law regarding the Flinders law programs and serve as a reference point.

The Flinders Law Board of Advisors ensures that Flinders law programs and courses are relevant in today's changing legal services sector environment. Flinders Law Board of Advisors members are leaders in industry and government, who are committed to ensuring that the College of Business, Government & Law continues to provide high-quality legal education and research.

 

Terms of Reference

The Flinders Law Board of Advisors serves as a source of independent advice to the Dean of Law and the Vice President & Executive Dean of the College of Business, Government & Law on:

  • Trends and developments in legal practice, the legal services sector and the broader professional services sector in SA, Australia and internationally
  • Relevance of course structure and curriculum content
  • Trends in demand for graduates
  • Strategic opportunities for recruitment, collaboration and engagement

The Flinders Law Board of Advisors will:

  • Guide the future directions of Flinders law programs
  • Assist the College of Business, Government & Law to increase its engagement with industry, the southern region, professional bodies and the community
  • Use members’ professional networks, profile and reputation to raise the profile of, and build, Flinders law programs’ reputation and the Flinders University brand
  • Offer a broader perspective on education and research program directions
  • Provide a forum for the dissemination of information on matters of interest, especially matters relating to law, to the College of Business, Government & Law
  • In particular, consider the LLBLP and the JD in terms of its goals, specific teaching program, and provision of resources

 

Meetings

Three times per year in the Level 14 Boardroom of Flinders University’s City Campus from 5:15-7:00 pm on days suitable to members

 

Membership

  • Flinders Law Board of Advisors membership will comprise:
    • Chair (senior external member of community relevant to the Flinders law programs)
    • Up to 12 external members
    • Vice President & Executive Dean of the College of Business, Government & Law or delegate
    • Dean of Law or delegate
    • Secretarial support provided by the College of Business, Government & Law
  • Membership will be by invitation, with all external members appointed by the Vice President & Executive Dean of the College of Business, Government & Law
  • External member time is contributed on a volunteer basis, and no board fees are payable
  • External members will be appointed for a two-year term
  • The initial appointment of six of the external members will be for a three-year term
