Observing university topic lectures

The University has extended its Study Assistance for Professional Staff Scheme to include observing topics conducted at Flinders University.

What is observing a topic?

Observing a topic allows you to attend lectures for a particular topic. Observing a topic does not include attendance at tutorials or laboratory classes. Observing lectures does not award a participation certificate and cannot be counted as credit towards a topic in an award course at the University.

Topic and timetable information

Not all topics can be observed. Topics that are delivered as seminars, workshops, via distance education, online, involve a field trip / research work / professional experience placement component, have online lectures, or do not have lectures, are not available for observing. Some postgraduate topics are also not available.

All topics require permission from the Topic Coordinator to attend lectures. You can find timetable information, topic unit values and Topic Coordinator details on the topic information website.

The following topics cannot be observed despite having a lecture component:

The key points are:

• Professional Staff can apply for up to six hours of paid leave per week to attend lectures.
• Any leave granted is subject to the convenience of the work unit involved and the approval of the Senior Officer of the area.
• Applications for leave must be made in advance and on the Application for Observing Topics form.
• Staff members are responsible for identifying the topic they wish to observe and for ensuring this is approved by the Topic Coordinator.
