We are creating a new, uniquely Flinders 50 year Master Plan – a blueprint for the long term physical development and infrastructure required for the Bedford Park Campus to ensure it remains attractive, vibrant, accessible and sustainable into the future.
Last year, we engaged with the University and broader community to hear your insights about the most valued aspects of the Bedford Park Campus, areas needing improvement and innovative ideas for potential inclusion in the Master Plan.
Through May and June, we presented the key elements and gathered your additional feedback on the draft 50 year Master Plan.
The last time Flinders University undertook a Bedford Park Campus Master Plan was in 1992, over thirty years ago. Since then, there have been significant and rapid advances across the tertiary education sector, learning and teaching, technology, sustainability, research, student and staff expectations and much more.
A new Master Plan is required to maximise the future development opportunities of the campus and create an outstanding campus experience for students, staff and visitors.
A blueprint to guide, inform and prioritise physical infrastructure investments to ensure our campus continues to support Flinders University’s strategic objectives. It can cover a wide range of topics including types of land use and development, transport and parking, urban design, campus activities, connections, outdoor areas and open spaces.
The entire Bedford Park Campus is considered in the master planning process including North and South Ridge, the Hub, Flinders Living, Sturt, Health and Medical Research Building (HMRB) and Flinders Village, plus our sporting ovals and open spaces.
No, the Master Plan will only cover the Flinders University Bedford Park Campus. However, the Master Plan will consider how the campus is connected to these important precincts.
As this is a long-term, 50 year plan, projects will be implemented over time. Only once new recreational spaces are developed on the Hilltop Campus can the land north of the Town Centre be considered for development to accommodate other uses. Before future development could proceed, it must comply with relevant planning and consultation requirements.
The Master Plan proposes improvements to better organise public transport on campus and will continue to support sustainable modes of travel. It details improvements to public transport infrastructure including a future upgraded bus interchange for Registry Road for enhanced safety, accessibility and comfort.
With the campus experience commencing at Sturt Road and Flinders Drive, our internal campus road network will support a better, safer and more enjoyable path for all campus users. University Drive will be renamed University Boulevard, reflecting a shared, more considered and pleasant connection for pedestrians and vehicles. New and upgraded pedestrian crossings along University Boulevard will provide safe movement between campus destinations.
Reimagining the connections across the campus, the Plan anticipates a safer, accessible and enhanced pedestrian experience with University Walk. This will provide a cohesive connection from the Flinders Town Centre and Flinders Railway Station, past Flinders Living to the Hilltop Campus.
With tree shading and other weather protection, University Walk will offer opportunities to see our beautiful bushland and stunning sea views – a uniquely Flinders experience.
Better organised parking in locations that can respond to campus needs will be available for students, staff and visitors across the campus.
Parking will continue to support people who choose to drive or use ride share services to access the campus.
The Bedford Park Campus Master Plan is expected to be finalised in August 2025.
A Master Plan is not a development plan. Instead, it’s a concept vision for the future development of the campus over the next 50 years.
