The Student Experience Survey (SES) is an Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment initiative which provides current higher education students with the opportunity to talk about their experience of the institution they are enrolled in. The results of this research are used to help Flinders University and the government gain insight into students' experiences, and to monitor and improve teaching and learning in Australia. The SES takes place in August of each year.
Teaching staff are encouranged to take a moment during August classess to promote the SES to their students. Download this Powerpoint slide to add to class presentations, and request additional materials from surveys@flinders.edu.au.
The system of Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) adopted by Flinders University caters for the mandatory student evaluation of teaching and topics with a series of standard questions based on published educational research (referred to colloquially as standard SETs for Teaching and Topic, respectively). In the SET, students express their degree of agreement or disagreement on a five-point scale with statements about facets of their topic.
The Exit Survey is conducted to help Flinders discover the reasons why students choose not to re-enrol and the information is used to improve academic and other support services for students.
The Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) is an Australian Government Department of Education and Training initiative forming part of the suite of higher education surveys. The focus of the GOS is on understanding the labour force outcomes in the short term.
The GOS aims to gather feedback on graduates’ higher education experiences to improve the experience for future students.
The GOS is conducted by the Social Research Centre and measures destinations of graduates and labour force outcomes. Graduates are invited to complete the survey approximately four months after completion of their courses.
The Graduate Outcomes Survey - Longitudinal (GOS-L) is a continuation from the Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) and allows graduates the opportunity to express views on their course three years on from graduation. The focus of the GOS is on understanding the labour force outcomes in the medium term.
The GOS-L is conducted in February by the Social Research Centre and aims to improve higher education and measure employment outcomes for graduates.
This follow up to the GOS obtains an update on labour market status and some aspects of course experience. The survey also examines career aspirations, perceptions of the relevance of qualifications to employment and the importance of a qualification post-graduation. Findings concerning the activities of Australian resident bachelor degree graduates from Flinders University are compared against national averages.
