Designing and developing new courses is an incredibly complex process. You might start out with a grand idea to solve all the world’s problems but getting from there to enrolling students and actually teaching is not as straightforward as it might seem.
Flinders is a registered higher education provider with TEQSA, and we need to adhere to the Higher Education Standards Framework. This means that not only do we need to be acutely mindful of what we are providing for our students, but that what we do provide has been checked and assured via appropriate internal governance mechanisms.
It is important with any curriculum design that you clarify the vision, know the boundaries and parameters, align your ideas with industry and institutional needs, and – perhaps most importantly – bring together the relevant stakeholders to collaborate and forge a cohesive path.
The Curriculum Design Accelerator workshop series has been designed to clarify your intentions and finesse your ideas into a workable proposal. The modules step you through the curriculum design process, from broad strategy to course design and on to curriculum content and broad topic outcomes. Crucially, the workshops are interactive and collaborative, allowing input and collaboration between multiple stakeholders. The workshops are ideal for brand new courses, or for existing courses needing significant re-design.
Workshop 1: Strategic Design. Bring together important stakeholders to devise the intention of your course and determine your parameters. What is your graduate profile? What key skills, knowledges and attributes will your students attain through your course? What will your course description, aims and learning outcomes look like?
Workshop 2: Course Design. What is the overarching structure of your course? What is its duration, AQF level, and unit value? Will you have core topics, specialisations, majors and minors? Where will elements like WIL, indigenisation of curricula, globalisation, and employability sit?
Workshop 3: Curriculum Content. Here the focus is on topics: how the course learning outcomes will be reflected in the topics. What broad learning outcomes will the topics have, and how will they be sequenced? How and where will priorities such as WIL, indigenisation of curricula, globalisation, and professional accreditation requirements be embedded?
These workshops segue into the more topic and delivery-focussed workshops: Crafting learning outcomes and assessment, Digital learning design and delivery approaches, and ABC learning design.

"loved it! I think it is a great concept and a really good way to get lots of stakeholders in the room to discuss how to design a learning experience."
“I really enjoyed the design of the workshop. It progressed logically so that we were able to build on previous discussions and brainstorming.”
“...this was one of the most stimulating workshops I have participated in. The whole atmosphere was inclusive and I think all ideas and suggestions could be shared. The accelerator approach worked well and kept everybody on track whilst still generating a wide variety of ideas and perspectives.”
