At Flinders, we’re committed to fostering a workplace where everyone feels supported at every stage of life.
In 2024, we took our first step towards becoming a menopause friendly workplace by hosting two successful workshops in partnership with Menopause Friendly Australia – one for staff and one for managers. The response to these workshops was overwhelming: high attendance, strong engagement, and a clear message – people wanted more!
In February 2025, with approximately 65% of our continuing and fixed term workforce identifying as female*, and around 55% aged between 41 and 60, menopause isn’t just about the personal experience. It’s a workplace reality.
There is no exact time that menopause will start, and the age can vary considerably between women. Menopause most commonly impacts women aged between 45-55, but there are many women aged anywhere between 40-60 that may be experiencing symptoms. Symptoms usually begin during perimenopause, the first stage of menopause, and symptoms can last throughout the menopause transition. Menopause can last for as little as two years, or up to 10.
Increasing awareness of menopause reduces any associated stigma. Greater understanding will benefit everyone, helping Flinders to attract, and retain our skilled and talented people while promoting workforce participation in older women.
In 2025 Flinders is taking the next step and working towards official Menopause Friendly accreditation.
To support this journey, we have launched a dedicated Teams site: Menopause Awareness @ Flinders. This space is open to all Finders staff who want to be a part of the conversation and help us become a more informed and supportive workplace.

*Flinders acknowledges that some individuals who undergo menopause do not identify as female, and we are committed to inclusion and respect for our staff.
According to the Australasian Menopause Society, in 2021, approximately 83% of women experiencing menopause were affected at work. Some common symptoms include hot flushes, sweats, sleep disturbance, and mental health issues.
Not everyone will want to discuss menopause at work, or with their manager. Flinders is aiming to raise awareness of menopause and it’s impacts with all staff, including providing supervisors with the relevant knowledge to enable safe discussions about this topic should anyone want to raise it.
As an organisation, Flinders recognises the impact of menopause on the workforce. To address the challenges seen from menopause, Flinders is taking action to embed a change in culture. This includes:

Supervisors play an important role in providing support for staff. Research from Bupa showed that almost a million women had left jobs as a result of menopausal symptoms. As a supervisor, the support you provide will have a significant impact on your team.
It is important not to make assumptions about menopause. The age, the impact and the experience, will vary considerably from person to person. The role of a supervisor is to provide a safe and supportive environment.
Not all staff will want to discuss their menopause journey with people from their workplace. These are ways you can provide support as a supervisor:

World Menopause Day is held on 18 October with the purpose to raise awareness of menopause and the support options available to improve health and wellbeing of women. In 2024, the theme is Menopause Hormone Therapy.
We encourage managers and staff to look at ways you could acknowledge this event within your area.
